Victorian Mourning Outfit
This outfit consists of a jacket, dress, hat and handbag.
It has been copied in detail from an original (full sized) outfit.
The fabrics used are a luxurious silk velvet, pure silk habotai and black satin.
There are layers and layers of ruffled and pleated black lace.
The jacket is probably the most intricate one I have made to date. The back seams are piped
with black satin and the sleeves have cuff openings trimmed with buttons and embroidered with
roses. The black piping continues down the back of the sleeves and around the cuffs.
The sleeves are lined in white silk to prevent staining the doll.
The jacket is fully lined in white silk. It has a black lace pleated ruffle sewn into the lining to
give the ruffled neckline.
The waistline is very fitted to the doll and gathered into a black satin belt. This has been
embroidered with black roses at the center back and also at the front which fastens with a tiny
hook and eye.
The collar and front of the jacket have a black satin piped edging which gives way to a pleated
lace trim around the lower edge.

The back of the jacket has a frilled bustle tail.
The velvet tails have been pleated back over
themselves several times to give the fullness
and bustle shape, then the edges trimmed
with the pleated lace.
Underneath the jacket there is a very fitted fishtail shaped dress.
This is made in pure silk and heavily trimmed in ruffled and pleated lace.
The dress is fully lined in white silk.
The bodice is tightly fitted and trimmed with Nottingham cotton lace. It has a halter neck so that
when the jacket is worn over the top, there is no bulkiness.
It fastens down the back and at the back of the neck with tiny black press studs.
The skirt has layers of organza and lace in tiny sharp pleats, these have been overlaid with
swirls of ruffled Nottingham lace.
The white lining finishes in a floor length petticoat that has been trimmed with lace around the
hem.
To complement the outfit there is a hat and an evening bag.
The hat has been trimmed with Nottingham lace and curled black feathers.
The handbag is heavily beaded and embroidered with black roses.
It's handle is trimmed with silver buckles.
And to finish off the outfit of course, there
are the black period style t-strap shoes.
