The Grand Duchess
This outfit has been inspired by the
beautiful gown above worn by the Grand
Duchess Elizabeth the photo was taken in
July 1887.
This outfit has been made as a birthday present for a very special lady.
Happy Birthday!
The outfit has a separate jacket and skirt made in a shimmering white silk fabric. The skirt is
structured so that the train can be buttoned up into a bustle or left as a long train. It has satin
straps which are sewn into the waistband under the skirt.
The back of the dress has a multitude of cartridge pleats around the back to get as much fabric
into the skirt as possible to give it the bustle effect.
It fastens at the side with a hook and eye. The lower edge of the skirt has a delicate silver
embroidered lace and the top edge of this has been trimmed with a string of pearls.
The jacket is very tightly fitted to the body. It has a low neckline with an inset voile
"scarf" this has been hemmed in tiny silver stitches. The sleeves are silk chiffon which
have been embroidered in silver thread and minute silver crystal beads sewn in. The cuffs
are trimmed with Nottingham lace.
The back and side bodice panels have an overlay of silver lace to match the skirt and the
front has been embroidered with flowers and applied crystals. The jacket is fully lined in
silk.
There is an underskirt to give more fullness, this
has a padded bustle to the back. The underskirt has
been trimmed with Nottingham lace and fastens at
the side with press studs and tiny buttons.
And of course, shoes, printed with delicate roses.
